"Stanislavski once wrote that you should ‘play well or badly, but play truly.’ It is not up to you whether your performance will be brilliant – all that is under control is your intention. It is not under your control whether your career will be brilliant – all that is under control is your intention."

Today (Thursday the 18th) and Show Days

Hey gang,

MAKE UP
I am so sorry that this makeup info is so last minute ... staying at the school evenings until 10pm or later every day for the past week has my brain "stopping" by the time it gets home at night.

So, the kids should bring their own cover up, blush, mascara and eye liner with them (obviously if they don't have it today it's not a problem). It should all be "neutral" basics - light cover up and a blush. Brown or black mascara/eye liner.

Any specialized makeup will be provided. And I'm sure we have "extra" cover up and blush ... though we don't want the kids to share eye makeup for health reasons.

TODAY
Also, at the end of yesterday's rehearsal (which went really well), I asked the kids to see if they could stay after directly following school - this is because we did not get to Act 2 yesterday.

We will work from 3 - 4pm on Act 2. Then the kids will have a dinner/relax/homework break from 4 - 5pm.

At 5 they will begin to put on their costumes and makeup - this hour is also rather laid back - and then from 6-6:40 we will do a photo call (so parents and everyone have nice still shots rather than blurry show shots)...and then the run begins at 7pm.

I anticipate them taking 2 hours (or just under) to run the show.

THANK YOU ... IT'S ALMOST OVER!!! :o)

It seems that either time frame is ok for most folks, so I'd like to go 12-5pm on Monday the 15th.

Thanks!

Monday the 15th

*Hopefully your kids brought this letter home to you yesterday! :o)

10 Nov. 2010

Dear Parents:

Monday the 15th of November is a half day, despite that fact we need to have a rehearsal. Mrs. Raskopf and I are willing and able to hold rehearsal right after school – the kids would be dismissed at 11:30am and would have half an hour or so for lunch in the cafeteria (they need to bring their lunch; and they should have a snack or two for the afternoon). We would then conduct rehearsal.

This letter is to ask parents what the best time frame for rehearsal would be – being that many parents work, and there will be NO school provided transportation that day … (we’re almost like free day care for the afternoon…)

We could hold rehearsal from 12 – 3pm or 12-5pm. (Either time frame will include appropriate breaks for the kids.)

There is still A LOT to be done with the show, and having a “long” rehearsal that day would benefit us greatly – especially where the technical aspects are concerned.
~Working with the costumes.
~Implementing the lighting – working with the spot lights etc…
~Dealing with the set pieces and their transitions.
~Working the newly learned (and not yet learned) fight choreography.
~Working the flying sequences.
~And working on all the “fix it” pieces in the different scenes.

So, I would like to ask everyone to let me know which time frame is preferable, and to please let me know by Friday so that I can notify the kids on Monday’s time frame before the weekend (it will also go on the blog).

PLEASE EMAIL ME at margaret.e.hall@googlemail.com or call me at 518-428-1351
Thank you!
~Margaret

Articulation Poem

Articulation is very important, this should be combined with strong project so that the dialogue is heard clearly - and loudly - throughout the theatre! :o)

Here's a poem that helps to open the mouth, and has a lot of d's & t's, that should be clearly articulated ...

I had a Hippopotomus
I kept him in a shed
I fed him up on vitamins (pronounced like vit-ah-mins)
And vegetable bread (pronounced like veg-ah-tah-ble)
Lest he should be affected by Depression or the Dumps
By Hippopotomeasles or Hippopotomumps!

Character Work

For your characters:

*Remember it is NOT you on stage, it is you're portrayal of someone else, your character.

*When you're working on your line memorization you should look at the adjectives you've written down about who your character is, and be "thinking like" your character when learning the lines.

*Look at how other characters in the play describe you - indirectly and directly.

*Listen to the lines that surround yours (listen to the play), your lines make sense if you understand the scene you are in. So listen to the dialogue and pay attention to it and the action on stage at all times!!!

*Think about your characters physicality. How does your character move, it should be different to you in your typical "Hi I'm Joe/Jane Kid" daily routine.

THIS IS A PLAY ... SO, PLAY!!!

Here are some good descriptive words for everyone to think about ...

Playfull
Curious
Adventurous
Sinister (Hook)
Vengeful (Pirates)
Maternal or Motherly (Wendy, Mrs. Darling & Nana)
Excited (especially ensemble ... )
Creative
Enthusiastic
A Follower (Lost Boys follow Peter; Pirates follow Hook)
Disciplined (especially Mr. Darling, Wendy and John)
"Know It All" (especially Peter and Slightly)

What others can you think of???

How do Pirates walk - what age Pirate are you and does it affect how you'd move?
How do the Lost Boys move? How old are you? (ie: Twins, do you walk and talk like one another?)
How do you make your movements different, Wendy, from being a kid to being a grown woman with a child at the end of the play?

Do you talk differently? Have you changed your voice some way - aside from the accent - to make you more "Hook'ish" or more "Parental" or more "Piratey" or more "Lost Boy'ish" ... ?

etc...

Dear Parents

I am going to be making a "Parent Help List" (which will include places people are asking about Business ad's for the program) today. This way we will know the areas that still need some parent help.

If you have not yet let me know where you're able and willing to help out, please let me know!

And, where business ad's are concerned ... so far, though I have handed out about 20 or more requests, we only have 4 ad's in total. This is the area that keeps the budget nice for the following year's show, so please ask anywhere you can?!

Thanks.

Accent Tips

Each time I give an accent tip in rehearsals I will add it here - so that the kids {and the parents, when helping with lines :o) } will understand why something is circled or underlined etc...

Circled - any word circled in the script is part of what I call the "Ask List". Where Americans say ask, the a sound in British English goes to an ah sound - so ask becomes ah-sk.
Glass becomes Gl-ah-ss Dance becomes D-ah-nce and so on ... now this can be tricky at times, for example (which is on the ask list - ex-ah-mple) hand is a word where the a does not change, it stays hand.

So, any word that is circled should be practiced in the accent, and goes one th Ah-sk List! :o)

Boxed In - if a word in the script has a box around it, the u in the word - where in American English is an oo sound, is changed to an ew sound for British English. So the word stupid in American English (st-oo-pid) becomes ST-EW-PID. Duty becomes d-ew-ty; student becomes st-ew-dent.

So, any word that is boxed in should be practiced thus. (It seems as though this one might not be needed in our script. :o)

Squiggly Underline - we've talked about these in rehearsal ...
Mother --> Moth'ah
Water --> W-aw-er
Talk / Walk --> W-awlk / T-awlk
Captain --> Cap'in
At all --> At'awl
Not / Lot --> N-aw-t / L-aw-t (this one is a bit of an exaggeration, the aw sound is soft)

:o)

Biz Ad List

Here is a list of the places in town, and / or, places I know have placed ads in programs in the past. I've put my name after the places where I have already submitted the forms. If you approach a business on this list, or another you know of, please leave a comment here letting me know. Thanks. (It's a long list...)

*If you have not yet brought your signed Parent/Student Contract or contact info sheet, please do so on Tuesday. They can be left for me in the MS Main Office.

SPORTS
*If your child is in an afterschool sport, and they are called to rehearsal, we would like to work it out in this fashion:
~If rehearsal goes from 2:50 – 4:10 than we’d like them to go to practice from 2:50 – 3:30 – rehearsal from 3:30 – 4:10.
~If rehearsal goes from 2:50 – 5:00 than we’d like them to go to practice from 2:50 – 3:55 and rehearsal from 3:55 – 5:00.
*If it is a game/meet day and it’s away, we know they will not be at rehearsal – this will not be counted as an unexcused absence. If it is a game/meet day and it’s home, we’d like to work it out as I have listed it above. (They come to us for a bit, and then go on to the game/meet.)
*I will do my best not to schedule kids on game days, but that can’t be said for all practice days, so we hope this shared method will work for all.

*Other Set/Costume etc…work calls will happen in the evenings, and we will let you know when they are, as we get going.

Kabuki Theatre

This year we will be introducing the cast to a style of theatre done in Japan called Kabuki Theatre. More specifically, we will be implementing a specific element of Kabuki theatre, that of the Koken or Kurombo - who are stage assistants dressed in black, in our production.

The Koken or Kurombo are there to help the actors with props, costumes and other things, and are in full view of the audience when doing so. Come to the show to see how we will utilize this convention of Japanese theatre in our production.

We have enlisted the help of some High School students who will undertake the role of the Koken or Kurombo for us.

~Ms. Hall

You can read more about Kabuki by googling it.

Also, if you follow this web link
https://sites.google.com/site/utnarukami/kabuki-theatre-3/kabuki-acting-traditions-techniques
and watch the first youtube video on the page, you can see a Kurombo in action!

Our Kurombo:
